Making Visible The Kingdom Through Convergence

Brennan Manning – Home At Last

Brennan Manning“I want neither a terrorist spirituality that keeps me in a perpetual state of fright about being in right relationship with my heavenly Father nor a sappy spirituality that portrays God as such a benign teddy bear that there is no aberrant behavior or desire of mine that he will not condone. I want a relationship with the Abba of Jesus, who is infinitely compassionate with my brokenness and at the same time an awesome, incomprehensible, and unwieldy Mystery.” ― Brennan Manning

Today I learned that Brennan Manning completed his journey here with us and is now resting in the embrace of Jesus.  I can’t overstate his influence not only on my life, but on the millions that he touched with his Ragamuffin Gospel.  My wife Catherine and I were blessed to hear him speak at Nyack College while I was attending seminary.  I remember that we walked across campus to Christie Hall on a very snowy winter evening in 2007 expecting the event to have been canceled.  Instead we gathered with a relatively small group (considering who the speaker was).  We were so blessed to hear him speak.  I remember the weight of his words and being so humbled by the truth and yet so confident of the love of God in Christ.  He was so passionate and full of contagious joy.  You know that he had been radically transformed in a way that made me think of the magnitude of Paul’s Damascus conversion.  I don’t know how you could not see Jesus in Brennan Manning.  I hope by God’s grace to embrace my brother on that distant shore. “Define yourself radically as one beloved by God. Every other identity is illusion.” – Brennan Manning
