Loving Louisiana – The 9th Ward
I am heading out today with my wife Kate and about 30 high school students from the Youth Group of Goodwill Church. We’ve packed ourselves into several vans and put together quite the convoy as we head south to the Big Easy. We are headed for the Ninth Ward of New Orleans – one of the areas hardest hit by Hurricane Katrina. Ahead of us we have 10 days of service, ministry, and discipleship in the wake of the hurricane. We will be serving some of the area’s poorest communities repairing homes, clearing debris, and ministering to those devastated by loss. I’ve heard that it resembles something out of a post-apocalyptic film.
We’ll be staying at a community center in an area that requires we be behind a locked fence at night. I have no doubt this is going to challenge all of us spiritually, emotionally, and physically. Some days I’ll have a hammer in one hand and a guitar in the other and other days a bible in one hand and my hammer-drill in the other. May we all remember how blessed we truly, make Christ visible to those in the Ninth Ward, and see Christ in those we are serving.
